Conical Steel Drums
Nestable steel drums that stack full and nest empty.
Tapered steel drums designed to nest inside one another when empty, which cuts the space and freight cost of returning or storing empties. Used for decades in juice concentrate, purée and paste applications, and increasingly for viscous chemical products.

Same Operation. Smarter Empty Drum.
If your operation already uses straight-wall steel drums, moving to conical drums does not require reinventing how you handle steel drums. When full, they perform much like the steel drums you already know — filled, closed, handled, stacked, stored, palletized and transported using familiar industrial practices.
They are not simply “export drums.” The fundamental difference is the geometry: a controlled expansion toward the top lets empty drums nest inside one another.
When full: familiar steel-drum functionality.
When empty: dramatically better space efficiency.
That reduces the space required for empty-drum storage, handling and transportation without sacrificing the basic functionality processors expect from a steel drum.
25+ Years of Conical Drum Experience
Vetting, procuring, importing and delivering conical steel drums for industrial applications for more than two decades.
The advantage appears when the drum is empty.
The Difference Is in the Drum.
Not every conical drum performs the same way. With more than 25 years of experience sourcing and evaluating conical steel drums, we pay particular attention to the manufacturing details that affect real-world handling — proper steel preparation, welding, forming, coating and paint curing. One especially important consideration is clean separation after nesting: high-quality coating and manufacturing help drums separate smoothly rather than binding together, making them easier for operators to handle in day-to-day production.
Our focus is simple: reliable drums. Consistent handling. Fewer operational headaches.
1,900 empty drums. Stop paying to move air.
A cylindrical empty drum is mostly empty space, and you pay to store it and to ship it back. Conical drums nest inside one another, so the same pallet, truck and warehouse bay hold several times more empties. Exact figures depend on the size and configuration you order.
Why it is used
- Empty drums nest, so return freight and warehouse space drop sharply.
- Steel handles hot fill, cold storage and long transit without deforming.
- Widely reused and fully recyclable at end of life.
Typical options
- ✓Multiple capacities
- ✓Open head with lever-lock ring
- ✓Lined or unlined interior
- ✓Painted or galvanized exterior
- ✓Pallet configurations to suit your storage

| Locking ring | 24 gauge | 0.6 mm |
Gauge equivalents are approximate and vary with steel type: 25-gauge is about 0.53 mm in galvanized and 0.56 mm in stainless steel; 24-gauge runs 0.61–0.70 mm and 22-gauge 0.76–0.85 mm depending on the steel.
A 0.9 mm body is available for specific requests with volumes above 10,000 drums per year.

Full-drum storage limits
Maximum storage height for full drums, with four drums per pallet. Maximum weight is shown per drum.
| Body thickness | Maximum storage height | Maximum drum weight |
|---|---|---|
| 25 gauge (0.5 mm) | 3 pallets (1 + 2) | 463 lb (210 kg) |
| 24 gauge (0.6 mm) | 3 pallets (1 + 2) | 529 lb (240 kg) |
| 24 gauge (0.7 mm) | 4 pallets (1 + 3) | 463 lb (210 kg) |
| 22 gauge (0.8 mm) | 4 pallets (1 + 3) | 529 lb (240 kg) |
How they are built
- Body formed from pre-painted steel sheet, assembled after the paint has cured, so the finish does not peel or stick.
- Galvanized bottom base to keep rust out of the seaming area.
- Standard lithography: blue enamel outside, pale yellow food-contact epoxy-phenolic varnish inside; see Specifications.
- Anti-rust exterior paint; BPA-free paint available on request.
- Cold-rolled steel sheet to EN10130 and EN10131.
Sizes and closures
- Working capacity around 58 US gal (220 L) or 60 US gal (230 L); other heights available.
- Body dimensions worked out to load efficiently in standard ISO containers.
- Galvanized steel cover, plastic cover, or cover with two bungs.
- Zinc-coated versions available where the shipment is regulated.
Handling and logistics
- Empties arrive shrink-wrapped in bundles on pallets and come off with a forklift, so unloading is quick.
- Nesting cuts the space empties take in storage and on return freight.
- Well-made drums separate cleanly after nesting — coating and curing quality matter.
- Maximum storage height for full drums depends on body thickness and drum weight; see the full-drum storage limits below.
Reuse and end of life
- Built to be washed and reused rather than discarded after one trip.
- Steel is fully recyclable at end of life.
- New drums avoid the contamination risk that comes with repurposed containers.
Conical vs. straight-sided drums
Same job when full. Very different when empty.
| Conical drum | Straight-sided drum | |
|---|---|---|
| Empties per pallet | 100, nested | 4 |
| Empties per 53-foot dry van trailer | About 2,000, nested | About 290 |
| Truckloads for 10,000 empty drums | 5 | 35 |
| Return freight | One truck carries several loads of empties | You pay truck rates to move air |
| Warehouse space | A fraction of the pallet positions | Empties eat the same space as fulls |
| Filled stacking | 3–4 pallets high, depending on specification | Confirm for the selected drum specification |
| Reuse | Washed and returned many trips | Often one-way or reconditioned |
One truckload of empties: 6.9× more conical drums, 7× fewer trucks
A 53-foot dry van carries about 2,000 nested conical drums — 6.9 times as many as the roughly 290 straight-sided drums in the same space. For 10,000 empty drums, that is 5 truckloads instead of 35: fewer trucks, fewer pallets, less handling, and up to 35% lower transport CO₂ per drum moved.

~2,000 drums
Conical, nested — 53-foot dry van trailer
Around 100 nested empties per pallet, stacked through the full trailer height.

~290 drums
Straight-sided — 53-foot dry van trailer
Only 4 empties per pallet, so 35 trucks move what conical drums move in 5.
