Steel drum comparison

Conical Drums vs. Reconditioned Steel Drums

Reconditioned steel drums are a common way to lower packaging cost. New nestable conical steel drums offer a different route to the same goal: a new drum with a known specification, plus far lower cost to ship and store the empties.

What you know about the drum

A reconditioned drum has had a previous life. Its history, wall condition and interior lining vary from drum to drum, and every one has to be cleaned and inspected. A new conical drum is built to one specification: carbon steel DC01 (EN 10130/10131), a 0.5–0.8 mm body (0.7 mm standard), a 13 µm blue enamel exterior and a 14 µm food-contact epoxy-phenolic interior.

Where the savings come from

Reconditioning saves on the price of the drum. Conical drums save on space. Empties nest inside one another, so 100 fit on a pallet instead of 4 straight-sided drums. About 2,000 fit in one 53-foot dry van trailer instead of about 290. Moving 10,000 empties takes 5 truckloads instead of 35, with up to 35% lower transport CO₂ per drum.

Reconditioned steel drum

  • • Used drum, cleaned and inspected
  • • Condition and lining vary by drum
  • • Straight-sided: 4 per pallet, does not nest

New conical steel drum

  • • New DC01 steel, one documented spec
  • • Food-contact epoxy-phenolic interior
  • • Nests: 100 empties per pallet

Same operation

  • • Filled, closed and handled like other steel drums
  • • Palletized and stacked full
  • • Clean separation after nesting with quality coating

Quality still matters

Not every conical drum performs the same way. Steel preparation, welding, forming, coating and paint curing decide whether nested drums separate cleanly. We have spent more than 25 years vetting, sourcing and delivering conical steel drums with that in mind.
